Reprinted from Package Printing Magazine Hector Ramirez started The Die Shop in Southern California about ten years ago. During that time, his business has grown every year in a difficult market. Hector attributes his business success to three things, a passion for customer service, a team of dedicated employees and skilled craftsmen, and the vision to invest in the latest automation technologies. He started the business after working as a manager for a major corrugated converter. He felt that the industry needed a tooling supplier that was more responsive to customer needs. As his business grew, and the volume of business increased, he realized that simply adding people was not the answer. First, it is difficult to find qualified craftsmen. Second, all employees have different levels of training and expertise, and this affects the consistency of the tooling. Third, adding people becomes less effective as the number of people increases.
I’d much rather have 15 employees doing the work of 30 or more. The EasyBenders allow me to do that, and with the decreased cost and overtime reduction, the machines are paid off quickly.” When Hector bought his first EasyBender it was a major decision, as it is for most entrepreneurs making their first large equipment purchase. Hector says, “The first EasyBender was a big decision, but I knew I had to do it. The competition will kill a business if you don’t invest in the technology. With the pace of business today, if you are not moving forward, you’re moving backward.”
When asked how his employees have taken to the new technologies, Hector said, “I am fortunate to have such a great team. Our people are all excellent craftsmen with terrific skills. Many of them do not have formal computer training, and the EasyBender software is easy to learn and use. Technology is not a replacement for skill and craftsmanship. Rather, these machines are tools in the hands of a craftsman. Give them an EasyBender and they are like a kid in a candy store!” The Die Shop’s commitment to customer service was put to the test recently. A company that was not doing business with them at that time called with a request. They needed 14 full-shell rotary cutting dies by the following day. This was only about a month and a half after installing the last of the new EasyBenders. Hector said, “With our new EasyBenders we were up to the task. My team completed the 14 dies in 28 hours, completing on average one die every two hours. A shop of similar size doing this work by hand would have taken five days to complete the work!” Needless to say, the customer was surprised and pleased to see that The Die Shop could perform in this way. Hector comments, “Its one thing to say you have a commitment to customer service, it’s another thing to actually deliver. We would not have been able to service this customer without investing in this equipment” Request Information in the mail Contact Us! |
